Northeast Alabama Alumni Association

By Ben Cunningham (EN, '95)
NEAL
Sinfonia President
|
|
The association continues to remain closely involved with the
Epsilon Nu chapter at Jacksonville
State. Several NEAL
Sinfonia members attended the chapter's fall smoker in September, and
contributed manpower to the cast and chorus for the Ritual in November.
Meanwhile, the association is working to acquire its own set of Ritual
supplies so it can perform the brotherhood's most important fraternal
tradition.
Since January, NEAL Sinfonia has
helped locate 25 brothers who were on the Epsilon Nu chapter's list of
lost alumni. Reviewing the list revealed many names of
brothers who could be tracked down just through their personal
connections with alumni association members. Of course, Facebook helps
make that much easier. The association hopes to find many more of EN's
lost alumni, and is ready to provide guidance for any chapter that wants
to shorten its list.
In October NEAL Sinfonia welcomed
its newest member, Hebert Canada,
(Delta Beta '02). Herbert moved to the area this summer to become the
chorus director at Anniston
High School. The
association continues to recruit new members by word of mouth and through
Facebook. If you know an alumnus of your chapter who is living in this
corner of the state, please encourage them to join. NEAL Sinfonia meets
the first weekend of each month. Details for each meeting can be found at
the Facebook group page and at http://www.nealsinfonia.org.
Big things
are in the works for this spring, with a festival for high school jazz
bands at Anniston High planned for April 3. All brothers, collegiate or
alumni are welcome to attend, whether to help out or just to enjoy the
music. Stay tuned for details.

Fall Recruiting and New Brothers
One
of our goals this past semester was to increase our recruiting base past
what we typically gain from our Million Dollar Band recruiting. We spent
time participating in Get on Board day, which was hosted by the
University itself, as well as spent time in and around the music building
trying to get men interested in the Fraternity. We ended up distributing
13 bids and later, initiating 6 new brothers on November 21, 2009.
Mills Music Mission
We
were able to hold a very successful Mills Music Mission during the fall
semester. On October 25h, 2009 we went to visit the Northport
Rehabilitation Clinic. Our very own Matt McCoy, who works with WVUA, was
able to bring a video camera and record our efforts, which were later
aired on the local news that night. Our current plans for the semester
are to hold at least one, if not more, Mills Music Missions, and to visit
the NRC again, as well as the Capstone Village Retirement Community.
LipSync!
Last
spring we held our first annual LipSync! Contest. With the money raised
from the event we were able to go out in the community and paint the band
room of a local alumni Sinfonian. This year, we plan to host LipSync!
again and hopefully raise more money and do more community service at
another local area school. No solid dates yet but we plan to hold
LipSync! around the end of March, dates to follow as they become
available.
American Composers
Musicale
Every
spring we hold an annual American Composers Musicale. Although we dont
have any dates set yet, we have already begun discussing plans for the
musicale. We wish to expand our performance repertoire as well as combine
forces with our local Sigma Alpha Iota chapter.
Advancing Music in America
Starting
this semester, several brothers from our chapter have gone out to start
their internships as music educators. This group includes, Jon O Rourke,
Andy Cherolis, and Corey Funderberg. We wish them luck in all their
endeavors!
Recent Alumni Activity
Love
is in the air around the University
of Alabama! Alumni
Sinfonian and former FEO of the Omicron Phi Chapter, Matthew Lane Merritt
found himself engaged to his Sigma Alpha Iota Sweetheart Jenney Mandt.
More recently Alumni Sinfonian and former President of the Omicron Phi
Chapter, Ted Allen Holder III, were wed to his Sigma Alpha Iota
Sweetheart Brittany Farrell.
On a
different note, Alumni Sinfonian Daniel Saunders, has returned to the University of Alabama to pursue his Masters in
Musicology after spending two years teaching around the Jasper Area.

Great Fall Recruiting
This fall we entered the rush process looking to gain
more members than we had the past year.
Coming off of a semester with no probationary members, we made
posters and recruited as heavily as we could. We ended up giving out 11 bids, which
is the largest class that most of our brothers had ever seen. Although we are down to 8, we are
confident that this will be a very successful class, as they are prepared
to be initiated on Wednesday November 18th. We are very excited for this class, and
we hope to have a repeat next semester.
Mills Music Mission
We are planning to have our Mills Music Mission this
year at Magnolia Estates on December 5th. We are going to be singing songs from
our Christmas concert, which is on December 6th at 7:30 pm, as
well as traditional Sinfonian songs.
We are looking forward to singing for the people at Magnolia
Estates.
Probation
Progress
We are making progress towards completing the
requirements set forth by the COS. We had a university employed speaker
come and talk to us about alcohol, its effects on students, the
consequences of underage drinking and drinking in general, as well as
ways to get help about drinking through the school. We are also working on our presentation
that we will present at Province next spring. We also have revised our bylaws and are
working on finalizing those.
Christmas
Concert/ Blood Drive
We are holding our second annual Phi Mu Alpha
Christmas Concert on December 7th. We will be singing traditional
Christmas music, and we will have soloists and an ensemble. It will be at the Goodwin Recital Hall
and begin at 7:30. Our chapter is
also hosting a blood drive that will be done by Lifesouth on campus from
11 am to 6pm on November 30th.
We are very excited for this opportunity to put our name out there
on campus and to help society in a way that is always needed. Our goal is to have 30 people donate
blood throughout the day, with a majority of those people coming from the
music department.

The New Class
In November the Epsilon Delta chapter crossed its
biggest class ever! Eleven men of
music attained the rank of full Sinfonian, essentially doubling the size
of Epsilon Delta. The majority of
the new guys are members of the USA Marching Band, which completed its
first full season shortly before the initiation, showing that Epsilon
Delta and the Marching Band will have a good relationship for years to
come.
The First
Meeting
Epsilon Delta had its first meeting of the new
semester on January 11th. This was
also the first meeting attended by our newest brothers who are doing
their part to fuel the fires of Phi Mu Alpha. The chapter continued toward its goal
of revamping itself and increasing visibility. We want to let USA and the Mobile
region see what Sinfonia is really about: men of music advancing their
craft, bonding as brothers, and having a great time while they're at
it. More to come in future
releases of this segment.

Wrapping Up Our
Probationary Process
Our focus for the end of the semester was to
complete our rush process, and we did so following Thanksgiving. We initiated eight new members and had
several new alumni faces show up for our initiation. It was a great time, and we were more
than happy to officially welcome our new brothers.
Mills Music Mission-Fall 2009
December 5th was the date of our
semesters Mills Music Mission. As
usual, we visited Southaven assisted
living facility, and this time we took advice from the province Mills
Music Mission and made an effort to visit most of the rooms. We sang mostly Christmas tunes, and the
patients AND staff were appreciative of our efforts.
Spring 2010
This spring, our main intent is to educate our
new and existing brothers and to grow closer as a brotherhood. We held a chapter meeting on December 5th
before our MMM, and we brainstormed for two hours about the future of our
brotherhood. Some ideas we came up
with were as follows: a retreat
during the spring each year, more education throughout each semester, and
more alumni involvement. The
brotherhood even discussed some changes to our current probationary
process.
Fundraising
This semester, another main focus of our
brotherhood will be fundraising, and our first opportunity came forth
during the 2010 Samford Honor Band.
We hosted a concession stand and reached out to many possible
future Sinfonians. Hopefully, this
fundraising will better serve our efforts listed above.

PO Boys
Pi Omicron Continued on
during the fall semester, with the precedence set for operating within
the community and within the Alma Mater, with Sinfonian Flames burning
bright. We were privileged to continue our relationship with the Shoals
Community Theater Board of Directors by once again providing their fall
season with ushering services. We have found in this a wonderful chance
to build invaluable rapport in the community and with the patrons.
We initiated six upstanding
new men into our folds with the addition of the Lambda class. They were
privileged to be pinned at the conclusion of our Founders Day ceremony
with Stillman, Province 34s Delta Colony, in attendance for both
events. The semester ventured onward and Pi Omicron got to participate
for the third time in our bands Halloween party. We made our contribution
with the revival of our Haunted Practice Rooms that has seemed to
become a favorite of the students who attend.
Other endeavors over the
semester included the Classically Jazzy Christmas Concert, which our
chapter sponsored through the student allocations fund to bring in two
guest artists to perform and give master classes throughout the week. Dr.
Kristine Coriel, on French horn, and Dr. Martin McCain, a bass trombone
player, not only made for an outstanding performance, but also shared
their knowledge and expertise with the students in the music department.
Pi Omicron was proud to have been able to take part in such an
event.
Sinfonians from U.N.A were
glad to spread their love of music with the residents the Mitchell
Hollingsworth Assisted Living Facility in our Mills Music Mission.
Residents and staff alike enjoyed themselves as we raised our voices in
song and passed out flowers. However, our joyous outreach to the
community didnt stop there. Later on in the semester we teamed up with
U.N.A.s chapter of Tau Beta Sigma to walk through local neighborhoods
and sing Christmas Carols on the lawns of the homes for the enjoyment of
all who listened. We shared a joint potluck dinner with TBS afterwards, giving
us a new insight on the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical
students. Our voices and talents could be heard once again at our First
Annual Sinfonian Recital that we put on for the student body. Selections
from the red book, as well as anything from Broadways Rent to
Mozarts Die Zauberflφte came together for a fine evening of
musical talent exhibited by the music students of our chapter.
One thing not previously
mentioned in regards to our activities over the summer break is the
sponsoring of the Music For Marines benefit concert. This event
took place during the peak
of Northwest Alabamas
W.C. Handy Music Festival. Pi Omicron teamed up with the Mathew Connelly
Memorial Foundation to bring in a mainstream rock artist Jason Isbell for
a concert whose proceeds would go to military and local charities.
Several local bands opened up for a sold out crowd at the Shoals Theatre
in Historic Downtown Florence for an evening of favorite rock and roll
hits from today dating back to the Allman Brothers.
One goal accomplished that
struck pride in our brothers and served as a huge brotherhood-building
activity, was the updating of our ritual regalia. Several brothers took
turns in cutting, nailing, measuring, sanding, and even staining this
update. Due to its transformer-like qualities and its appearance while
not in use, some brothers at our chapter have dubbed it THE ALL
SPARK.
Pi Omicron is excited as ever
about the upcoming semester. We plan to incur as much attendance at
province workshop as well as the leadership institute as we possibly can.
We will continue to strive to better ourselves as men and as a chapter as
we write the next page in our history in Sinfonia. ALL HAIL!

Bylaws Overhaul
This
past semester marked an era of great change in our chapter. One such change came in the form of an
extensive recreation of the bylaws.
We literally threw out the old as if the chapter was new all
again. The bylaws committee was
charged with rewriting a new set of bylaws that included many of the same
rules and regulations as the older bylaws but, in addition thereto, add
several much needed ones. They
were also charged with creating a new format for the bylaws. I am proud to say that the end result
of the committees labors was better than even I could have
expected. The gentlemen
responsible for the creation of the new bylaws did an exceptional job and
for this moment I would just like to thank them.
Before
passing the new bylaws in existence, the bylaws committee distributed the
newly drafted document to the Brothers of the chapter and the chapter
held several town hall style meetings to accommodate any concerns that
the Brothers might have with any of the changes or additions contained
within the new document. After a
week of these meetings, the chapter called the new document to vote and
it passed with unanimous agreement.
The new bylaws serve as both a more professional document is
appearance and form. In addition,
the newly created bylaws will help serve the Brotherhood through
encouragement of personal accountability, better defined rules and regulations,
and higher focus on scholarship (As that is the primary reason we are all
in college). As I have said
before, the bylaws committee really did do an excellent job rewriting the
bylaws. If anyone is interested in
taking a look at the new bylaws, whether for personal consumption or as a
guide to writing new bylaws, please feel free to contact Lance Holman at
Troysinfonian2006@yahoo.com.
Probation
Lifted
December 2009 marked the end
of the Iota Nu Chapters two year Probation. For those unfamiliar, our chapter was
charged with a number of Risk Management violations for hazing and
alcohol abuse regarding our chapters probationary membership process
during the 2006 year. As part of
our terms of probation, our chapter was encouraged to start from scratch
and rethink many of the methods and strategies previously used for
recruitment and pledging.
I am very proud to say,
having been a part of the chapter during the whole process, the chapter
has completely changed its image in action and thought. One of the biggest difficulties
surrounding change is the battle against tradition. Fortunately for the chapter, however,
with a great number of exiting older Brothers and the stimulus of a large
number of new recruits, it was just as simple as creating new traditions. The new guys had no idea about the past
other than that which was communicated to them. With no real ties to those past
experiences, along with the continued construction of innovative PM
Plans, the chapter began rather quickly to form newer, better traditions
that focused on the qualities and expectations of a Sinfonian. To everyone who made this possible,
thank you. The chapter, indeed
Sinfonia as a whole, is better for it.
Spring 2010 Probationary Class
The
Iota Nu Chapter is proud to announce its current Spring 2010 Probationary
Class. These individuals have
excelled in every way. They have
shown a great deal of independence in organization and thought and have
shown the chapter, that even without the strict rules of probation, the
chapter can once again walk on its own again without crutches. We are hoping for the best with these
gentlemen and believe that each of them will act a Brothers part. Here is the Spring 2010 Iota Nu
